Never Meet Your Heroes – Preview

Prologue

I know you didn’t ask, but humor me for this moment while I give you some unsolicited advice anyways. Clichés, they exist for a reason and no matter how stupid they sound, they are generally right. I was a complete moron, and in my arrogance, I ignored two that could have prevented my worst nightmare from being realized.

Now, as I am falling through the rift, desperate to grab anything to stop my descent, I can’t help but think “Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.”

Yeah, I got my wish alright and now, I’d give anything to take it back. To go back to the moment I met him and just walk away. 

Every choice that led me to this moment replayed in my mind like a record stuck on repeat. Each idiotic misstep weighed heavier on my conscience than the last. 

Reality twisted around me, breaking apart at the seams as if the very fabric of existence seemed to have unraveled as I fell deeper forcing me to watch the unthinkable transpire. In those final moments just before the darkness swallowed me whole, Yukiino, the legendary knight, stood dying before my eyes. 

It’s all over. We lost.

The Castle of Thalvyr collapsed in fire and ruin.

As the past slipped from my grasp, the rift snapped shut leaving me alone to face the truth. My friends were dead because of me. And for the first time, I truly understood what it meant to lose everything.
